Just past the Lion’s Gate the city disappears and visitors enter into the animal-inhabited treasure of Berlin Zoological Garden. A longer and shorter circular path meander through the park past grey pachyderms and colourful fluttering birds, wild predators, solitary pandas and group-loving monkeys. “In the Midst of It All – Amazing Animal Diversity” is the motto of our strategic development plan for the Berlin Zoo. Home to more species than any other zoo in the world, the zoo features a park-like landscape structure and listed historical architecture. As an inner-city zoo, Berlin Zoological Garden promises to offer a concentrated experience rich in variety for generations to come. The existing landscape structures are to be retained, animal facilities enlarged and re-zoned according to taxonomic classification, listed historical architecture upgraded, and new structures carefully integrated. Inversion enclosures will conceal barriers, creating a context for the animal habitats. An easy-to-understand visitor guidance system, added highlights and extra gastronomic offerings also heighten the appeal of Zoological Garden.
Because of the city’s history Berlin has two zoological facilities. Right from the outset, it was important that the master plan identify the potential of both the Zoo and the Tierpark concurrently, creating destinations with future sustainability. For both master plans we devised strategies for different areas. Our concepts highlight approaches for both landscape and buildings as well as operational processes, visitor experiences, infrastructure and zoology.
Berlin Zoological Garden serves as the umbrella brand for both zoological facilities, which are designed to complement one another. Thus, in the future, the Tierpark Berlin will take its visitors on a journey around the world.
