How Nicole Srock.Stanley Developed One of Retail’s Most Influential Success Formulas
Some ideas change retail. Others redefine how an entire industry thinks. “More Experience per Square Metre” undoubtedly belongs to the latter.
What is now widely accepted and used by retailers, retail experts and consultancies alike can be traced directly back to 2014. The concise and memorable formula was conceived by Nicole Srock.Stanley, Founder and CEO of dan pearlman and one of Germany’s leading retail experts with more than 25 years of experience.
At a time when the retail industry was still overwhelmingly focused on the traditional KPI of “sales per square metre,”Nicole Srock.Stanley challenged conventional thinking with a simple yet powerful message: “Those who optimise only for sales per square metre will not succeed in the future. Long live experience per square metre.”
More than a decade later, her idea has proven more relevant than ever. Today, the concept has evolved from a visionary thought into an established strategic principle that is increasingly supported by industry research and embraced throughout the retail sector.
How the Formula Was Born: From Sales to Experience
“Retail is transformation” has long been one of the industry’s best-known sayings. More than ten years ago, that transformation was already well underway. The rapid rise of e-commerce and the widespread adoption of smartphones fundamentally changed consumer behaviour. It became increasingly clear that everything consumers could conveniently purchase online would eventually move online. This left physical retail facing a critical question:
What unique value can only a physical store create?
Nicole Srock.Stanley recognised the answer early on. Stores would have to become destinations rather than simply points of sale—places defined by carefully curated assortments, genuine customer understanding, vibrant communities, inspiring services and, above all, memorable experiences that customers would value and actively want to repeat. It was—and still is—a significant challenge. Even today, retailers continue searching for the right balance between online, offline and omnichannel strategies while striving to create meaningful experiences across every customer touchpoint. Nicole Srock.Stanley summarised this transformation as early as 2014:
The future success of a store will no longer be determined by sales per square metre—but by experience per square metre.
The formula represents far more than a marketing slogan. It redefines the physical store as a stage for brands, emotions, encounters and communities, positioning experiential value as brick-and-mortar retail’s strongest competitive advantage. This marked a fundamental shift in thinking that continues to shape the development of brand spaces, flagship destinations, experience stores and next-generation retail formats around the world. Years later, the concept of Retailtainment—the convergence of retail and entertainment—became firmly established in Germany. A natural continuation of this thinking was realised at LOOP5, where dan pearlman developed Germany’s first true experiential shopping mall. At LOOP5 near Frankfurt, attractions traditionally associated with the leisure industry—from a free-fall tower to a zip coaster—have become an integral part of the shopping destination itself, transforming the mall into a place where retail and entertainment merge seamlessly. LOOP5 represents the logical evolution of Nicole Srock.Stanley’s “Experience per Square Metre” philosophy.
A Formula that shaped an industry
What makes the concept particularly remarkable is the extent to which it has become embedded within the retail industry. Retail thought leaders, consultants and industry experts have adopted the formula in conferences, interviews and professional publications. Institutions such as BBE Handelsberatung now use “Experience per Square Metre” as a strategic management and evaluation framework for brick-and-mortar retail. https://www.bbe.de/de/aktuelles/publikationen/erlebnis-pro-quadratmeter-warum-die-neue-wahrung-des-stationaren-handels-nicht-mehr-umsatz-sondern-relevanz-ist/
The fact that what began as a visionary idea has become an established part of today’s retail discourse demonstrates its lasting impact and continued relevance.
Looking Ahead
What started as a counterpoint to the traditional KPI of “sales per square metre” has evolved over the past decade into one of the defining strategic concepts of modern retail. In an era where brands compete for attention, relevance and emotional connection, the formula is arguably more important today than ever before: Successful retail happens where every square metre becomes an experience. Today, “Experience per Square Metre” serves as a strategic guiding principle for the future of physical retail. And perhaps the industry’s famous saying, “Retail is transformation,” deserves a contemporary addition—one that reflects the challenges and opportunities ahead: Be bold. Create more Experience per Square Metre.
